To help better understand the value that data holds for the future of sustainable energy, the comprehensive three-day workshop was prepared and presented by Dr Fabian Huneke, a senior expert on energy markets of Energy Brainpool in Amman.

Seven engineers from the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources participated in the workshop, with their key inquiries gathered and answered during the course of the training.

The workshop reviewed suitable data management techniques to prepare energy balances. An energy balance is an accounting framework for the compilation and reconciliation of data on all energy products entering, exiting, and being used within a country. Energy balances display all data in a common energy unit, allowing users to see the total amount of energy consumed, and the relative contribution of different energy sources to the economy as a whole and to individual consumption sectors.  The energy data for Jordan was displayed and compared to the International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES), with recommendations on concepts, definitions, and compilation methods highlighted.

In addition to the topics covered the trainees familiarised themselves with the Eurostat energy balance builder tool, which is a well-known tool specialised in creating high quality and organised energy balance data sheets. A follow-up workshop is planned for early next year to further elaborate on the subject.
